CHARTER FAQ
The most important thing in the process of planning a superyacht charter is to decide on the wishes for the trip and discuss with your broker about all aspects that interest you. Below are recommendations and answers to the most frequently asked questions.
How is a charter legally executed?
A yacht charter agreement is formalized through a 4-party contract called MYBA (Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association). This means that four parties are involved in the charter process: the yacht owner, the charter company, the broker, and the client. The contract outlines the rental conditions, the rights and obligations of each party, yacht insurance and liability for damage, as well as other important aspects.
How is the charter cost calculated?
The standard yacht rental period is one week, and prices are typically quoted for this period. For charters longer than 7 days, the cost is calculated proportionally to the weekly rate, divided by 7 and multiplied by the number of charter days. For charters less than 7 days, the cost is calculated by dividing the weekly rate by 6 and multiplying by the number of charter days. Some yachts may have a minimum number of charter days that can be confirmed by the broker, for example, only 3 or more.
High and low season. When are the rates increased?
The cost of yacht charter can vary depending on the season. Usually, high season rates are applied to the most popular charter periods such as July/August, Christmas and New Year holidays, and also during significant events like the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival. During this time, rates may be increased. Low season rates are applied to all other periods. High and low season periods may differ depending on the region. For example, for the Mediterranean, it is July and August, while for Asia, it is the winter-spring months.
How is payment for the charter made?
Payment for the charter usually occurs in several stages. The first stage is payment of a deposit, which is 50% of the total charter cost for last-minute bookings. The second stage is payment of the remaining charter cost + tax and expenses (Advanced Provisioning Allowance). If you are booking a yacht 1.5-2 years in advance, then payment is divided into 3 installments.
Charter cancellation
If the yacht owner cancels the charter, the client can choose between a refund or a replacement yacht. In case of cancellation by the client, no refunds are provided.
What is APA?
APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) is a prepayment that clients make to cover expenses for food and beverages, fuel, and other costs related to yacht charter. Usually, the APA is around 20-30% of the charter cost and is paid before the start of the trip. During the charter, the yacht captain uses these funds to pay for all expenses, and the remaining amount is returned to the client at the end of the trip. APA helps avoid the inconvenience of paying various expenses on-site and simplifies the travel process.
Is it necessary to leave tips for the crew?
Of course, the decision to leave a tip or not entirely depends on you. If you are satisfied with the service and decide to leave a tip, it is recommended to leave 5-15% of the charter cost. There are regions where leaving a gratuity is a mandatory condition for the charter, and in such cases, we inform the clients in advance.
What should you keep in mind when using water toys?
It is important to follow all rules and recommendations provided by the yacht crew and follow instructions for using water toys. It is also necessary to comply with local laws and regulations, which may differ in different places. In all European countries, a license for using jet skis is required.
Do you need to get insurance before renting a yacht?
Before renting a yacht, it is necessary to get insurance to protect yourself from unexpected expenses in case of damage to the vessel, property, or third parties. It is also necessary to make sure that the insurance covers all expenses for evacuation, rescue, and transportation, if required.
Is smoking allowed on board?
It depends on the rules and restrictions established for a particular yacht. In some cases, smoking on board the yacht is completely prohibited, while in others, it is allowed only on open decks or in specially designated areas.
